Threads App Logo
Meta’s Threads app took the internet by storm this week after it launched on Wednesday, with many labeling it an app to (finally) rival Twitter. I couldn’t scroll more than once on my Facebook feed (yes, I still use Facebook) without seeing someone in a group asking other group members to follow them on the Threads app. So, what is Threads? And will it really dethrone Twitter as the main social media text app?
What Is The Threads App?
Threads is an Instagram-linked text-based conversation app (you literally use your Instagram login credentials to sign up and you must have an Instagram account to sign up for a Threads account). As you know, Meta is the parent company to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and now, Threads. So Meta is basically continuing its domination of the social media world. You can post up to 500 text characters on Threads, as well as photos and videos up to 5 minutes long. You also get to keep your Instagram followers, username, and verification status, since Threads and Instagram are linked anyway, so it’s pretty convenient in that way. It’s also free and available on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
A Rival To Twitter
Threads apparently had over 30 million sign ups in just one day. It’s obvious that it definitely has garnered some interest from Instagram and Twitter users alike. But can it really rival Twitter? Only time will tell, but we can only speculate for now. With Elon Musk announcing a restriction on how many tweets Twitter users can see per day, now would seem like the perfect time for Meta to strike with their Threads app. And that’s exactly what they have done. That being said, it’s still early stages. But many seem happy to have an alternative to Elon Musk’s Twitter. Just take note that, although you can deactivate your Threads account, you can only permanently delete it by deleting your Instagram account. So basically, once you’re in, you’re in. Granted, deactivation is good enough, if you just want to hide your account.
Opportunity
With any new app, if you get active on it early enough, there is always opportunity. Social media has provided a world of opportunities to anyone with something to share (which, to be honest, has been both fantastic and a nightmare). My point is, for anyone who wants to share something useful or entertaining to a new curious audience, this may be the place to start and grow. A new app equals a new platform to potentially grow a community on. Either way, if you do join Threads, have fun with it.
So, will you be trying out Meta’s Threads app? Are you already on it? We’d like to hear your thoughts.
